Kurdish people flash the V-sign as they sit in formation to form the initials of the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, the main Kurdish militia in Syria, on a hilltop on the outskirts of Suruc, at the Turkey-Syria border, overlooking Kobani, Syria, just over the border, in support of Syrian Kurds fighting the militants of Islamic State group, Kobani, also known as Ayn Arab, and its surrounding areas, has been under assault by extremists of the Islamic State group since mid-September and is being defended by Kurdish fighters.
